African Ancestry Family Reunion trips are curated cultural immersion journeys in Africa - centered on reclaiming identity, exploring cultural heritage, and celebrating the resilience of African people. This is no ordinary journey. while you may be visiting some of the same places as standard itinerary, your experience will be heightened and different.

There is a plethora of experiences available in a country like Nigeria. We focus on cultural immersion spending more time exploring tradition, culture and language.

Tips for a Seamless Booking Experience

1. Select your package and complete the questionnaire.


2. Create an account to manage your package and add-ons

When checking out, you should check the box next to "Create an account to manage your booking online." This will allow you to edit, adjust your trip, and select add-ons at a later date.


3. Take note of the processing fees 

When proceeding to payment, please expect to see a service fee if you pay by ACH or a 2.9% service fee if you pay by credit or debit card.


4. Manage payment over time

You can choose to set up automatic payments or go in monthly and make payments manually.


5. Look out for a confirmation email 

Once we receive payment, you will receive a confirmation email with your receipt, payment plan information, and the option to purchase travel insurance for this trip.


6. Store your account info and password

You can go back to your account any time to check your balance, pay it off, ask a question or choose an add on if you don't immediately

Refund/Cancellation Policy

AAFR's are 100% non refundable however if cancelled before 60 days for any reason before departure, the full trip  credit (dollar value), can be used for any additional AAFR within a year from the cancelled trip's start date.


If cancelled within 60 days for any reason before departure, there is a 30% penalty and only 70% of the trip credit (dollar value), can be used for any additional AAFR within a year from the cancelled trip's start date.


If cancelled within 30 days for any reason before departure, there is a 75% penalty and only 25% of the trip credit (dollar value), can be used for any additional AAFR within a year from the cancelled trip's start date.

Day 1

Welcome to Nigeria

Welcome to Nigeria!


You will arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos.


Upon arrival you will go through immigration where you will process your visa or visa arrival documents before moving through baggage claim, customs and outside to the carpark.


Look for the African Ancestry Family Reunion sign at immigration and you'll be escorted through the process.


We'll retrieve you outside and transfer to the hotel for rest.


The only activity planned is our welcome dinner.

Day 2

Explore Lagos Island

Lagos is divided into two parts: The Mainland and The Island.


Today we will explore Lagos Island and learn its unique history.


In the 15th century, the Awori settlement was conquered by the Benin Empire and the island became a Benin war-camp called “Eko” under Oba Orhogba, the Oba of Benin at the time. The Yoruba still use the name Eko to refer to Lagos. Lagos, which means “lakes”, was a name given to the settlement by the Portuguese.


Today we delve more into this history and learn about the names, families and people who helped to build Lagos Island.

Art Galleries, Museum, Markets and Landmarks

Continuing our exploration of Lagos Island, today we delve in the cultural art scene on the island.

Day 4

Badagry Island and Door of No Return

Today we journey to the Door of No Return in Lagos at Badagary. We start at the Bdagary Slave Museum and then move to the Door of No Return site. Today we learn about the horrors of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in Lagos to celebrate our strength, resilience and perseverance.

Day 5

Abeokuta and the Shrine

We take our first trip off Lagos Island for short journey to the mainland to Abeokuta to explore the wonders of Olomo Rock and the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.


Lunch is included.


(Optional ) In the evening, we'll set out to explore an experience at Fela's New Africa Shrine with live music in Ikeja.

Tour Activity Level:  Active

To fully take advantage of all this tour has to offer, guests need to be able to walk longer distances, climb several flights of stairs and navigate steps and uneven terrain walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g. cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators). This itinerary can include significant changes in temperature and altitude. Appropriate for travelers who are physically fit, expect a vigorous pace and enjoy participating in two to three hours of physical activity per day.

Today is free rest day at the Beach.

Osogbo in Osun State (Overnight)

Today we explore another part of Nigeria though the mainland to Oshun State in Osogbo. Many people in the U.S. who practice Yoruba and Ifa cultural lifestyles travel here to learn. Today we delve into learning about the deeply cultural and spiritual sides of Yoruba culture.


We'll spend the night in Oshun State and return to Lagos the next day.

Day 8

Ibadan

After breakfast and check out, we'll stop in Ibadan on the way back to Lagos and visit the local craft and arts market.

Day 9

Abuja

Breakfast and check out to fly to Abuja.


Upon landing we'll explore Abuja on a City Tour.

  • Aso Rock and Village

  • Nigerian National Assembly Complex

  • Zuma Rock

  • Abuja Arts and Craft Village


We will have lunch and a meet and greet with various officials of the Nigeria Federal Government excited to meet Nigerian descendants who have returned home.


We'll check in to the hotel after lunch and taking the rest of the evening to get settled.

Little to no walking.  Traveling at a leisurely pace, this itinerary requires a small amount of physical activity. Guests will need to be prepared to board a plane and bus. There will be some walking to rooms, cabins or restaurants and general points of interest. This may also include an occasional flight of stairs or some steps during transfers and stops. Appropriate for all travelers including those with lower mobility and who are comfortable participating in at least three hours of activity per day.

Renaming and Parade of Culture

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and there are so many different cultures.


Today we enjoy a cultural exhibition and parade of cultural performing arts showcase of the various distinct ethnic groups in Nigeria presented by the National Tourist and Culture Federation curated for African Ancestry Family Reunions.


After the Parade of Culture, we will have a renaming experience ceremony with Nigerian officials and press in attendance.

Day 11

Jabi Lake, Guarara Falls and Give Back

We spend our last morning visiting Jabi Lake and Guarara Falls just outside of Abuja. 


In the afternoon, we'll have lunch with a school in Abuja where we'll donate school supplies.


This is our last night in Nigeria.  People can explore live music and nightlife at one of the many lounges in Abuja.

Day 12

Farewell

After checkout, we depart the hotel to fly back to Lagos.


Once we land in Lagos we have a final market stop for last minute shopping. There will be a farewell lunch and then we'll go to the airport for the final departure.

About your organizer

The pioneers of genetic ancestry tracing for Black people around the world since 2003, African Ancestry entered the Heritage Travel sector in 2021 with the launch of African Ancestry Family Reunions. Our travelers have used an African Ancestry DNA Test to determine the present-day African countries and ethnic groups of their ancestors. We then take them home for a culturally immersive experience.
